Season 2010
UCD School of Archaeology postgraduate Will Megarry explaining our GIS and architectural survey work
Due to
regulatory and administrative delays, the 2010 excavation ran from
Monday 26th of July to Saturday 21st of August. Excavation was
focussed in Trench II at the top of the modern promontory. The
findings were particularly exciting and will appear shortly in our
2010 report (check our reports page).
Well preserved Early
Minoan I and II levels were excavated, and refuse from a possible
Middle Minoan II shrine was found in a stratigraphic sequence
stretching from then until late Late Minoan IA times, with many
sub-phases noted. Early examples of prehistoric and alphabetic
script were recovered also this season.
The architectural
plan and topography of the Bronze Age settlement has been further
revealed. Late Geometric remains indicate an early date for
re-inhabiting the coastal zone in this area of Crete.
Medieval remains include several phases of Early Byzantine activity
associated with an ecclesiastical settlement. This includes food
preparation areas and striking evidence for a possible raid on the
site. |
