The Irish Ambassador to Greece visits Priniatikos Pyrgos
We were honoured to have a visit from his Excellency Antoin Mac Unfraidh and his wife Maire on 6th and 7th of August. As this was during week four of our 2008 campaign, we were most pleased to have many areas open so that we could show our distinguished guests the hard work of the multi-national team operating under the auspices of the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens. Students from the UCD School of Archaeology and The School of Classics in Trinity College Dublin, along with our many American participants, particularly from the University of California at Santa Barbara, had great pleasure in showing the ambassador the many exciting discoveries they have made throughout the site.
Welcoming his Excellency on behalf of the area of Aghios Nikolaos was vice-mayor Mr. Michaelis Klontza and on behalf of Kalo Chorio was the Village Prohedros Mr. Kafetzakis, further expressing the warmth and hospitality that members of our team experience each day in the community around Kalo Chorio / Istron. We were also fortunate to have a visit on this same day from senior members of the Agrotiki (rural) Police including Stephanos Sitiakakis - chief manager of the prefecture of Lasithi, Manolis Masaros - Agronomos for Aghios Nikolaos and Manolis Christinakis representing the local police branch who ensure the safety of the site outside of the excavation season.
