Welcome to the home of our project. We hope you will bear with us as we develop this webpage, not all of our links are active yet, but we shall be fully up and running in the coming months. Located in the shadow of the Iron Age settlement of Vrokastro, Priniatikos Pyrgos is a rugged limestone headland jutting out into the Gulf of Mirabello in East Crete. Occupation began here over 5000 years ago in the Final Neolithic period and most key phases in Greek archaeology are well represented at the site.
The first trenches were excavated nearly a century ago by the pioneering archaelogist Edith Hall, and the present excavation follows on from over two decades of intensive research of the Vrokastro Survey and Istron Geoarchaeological Project
With the support of the 24th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, the Irish Institute of Hellenic Studies at Athens is presently undertaking a large-scale excavation campaign. Our goal is to explore the changing industrial, domestic and religious use of this important harbour settlement from its earliest origins to the present day.
